State Coalitions

Pioneer Network endeavors to provide opportunities for state culture change coalitions to share information and resources with each other and to provide guidance to individuals and organizations interested in establishing a coalition in their state. There are currently over 30 existing state coalitions and several other state coalitions are in the process of being established. Many of the coalitions have the following long-term care stakeholders participating on their Steering Committee or Board of Directors:

  • Provider associations
  • Quality Improvement Organization
  • State Long-term Care Ombudsman
  • State Survey Agency
  • Culture change training and consulting organizations
  • Academia
  • Citizens Advocacy Groups

The primary purpose of the coalitions is to advance culture change in their respective states. Coalition activities often include educational programs and networking meetings for providers; communications including a newsletter and a website; and education of policymakers and regulators about culture change. Consumer involvement and education is also an important activity for state coalitions.

The Pioneer Network is committed to serving as a resource to new and already established coalitions and to providing opportunities for networking among state coalitions. An illustration of that commitment is the hiring, in November 2007, of a Coalitions Coordinator to serve as the liaison between the Pioneer Network and the coalitions.

This website currently includes information on the key elements of successful coalitions, links to existing state culture change coalition websites; a list of state coalitions and contact information; resource documents for coalition support including governance, funding, and coalition networking calls; and listings of state government, survey agency and long-term care ombudsman involvement in culture change coalitions. The next phase of the Pioneer Network's website redesign will be more interactive and provide a user friendly way for state coalitions to share information and network with each other on an ongoing basis.
