Definition: cross·road \kros-rÿd\  1. the place of intersection of two or more roads  2. a small community located at such a crossroads  3. a crucial point especially where a decision must be made

Opening Plenary
Tuesday, August 10, 8:30 am–10:00 am
Meeting at the Crossroads:
Definition 1. The place of intersection of two or more roads

The Opening to a Pioneer Network Conference begins with the Roll Call of States (and countries!) which is guaranteed to get you energized for the rest of the day. For the tenth time, Carter Catlett Williams will convene our conference and make her opening remarks.

What happens when a discipline, an idea or occupation intersects with Culture Change?
Our Opening Plenary will look at this idea through three different perspectives.

What happens when the road of an elder community and a public school kindergarten cross paths?
This unique intergenerational program provides purpose and energy to the elders. It provides encouragement, acceptance and affirmation to the students. It is a natural marriage which could take place in any facility. It is a life-changer.

Monte Coffman, Executive Director, Windsor Place
Sherri Chittum, Kindergarten Teacher

What happens when creativity crosses paths with Culture Change?
From poetry and storytelling to dance and painting — creative expression is an act of individual growth. Engaging others in creativity is to foster growth and build community — a foundational step in the journey toward changing the culture of long-term care. Anne Basting explores the burgeoning field of creative engagement in long-term care and how these programs offer clear steps toward cultural transformation as well as improved health and well being.

Anne Basting, Director, University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee; Center on Age and Community

What happens when Massachusetts Ave. in D.C.
intersects with Culture Change?

We are pleased to hear remarks from the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Aging, Kathy Greenlee. She will speak about Long-Term Independence. "As we progress from nursing home care to long-term care to long-term supports and services, I suggest the next iteration should be long-term independence. This concept is person-centered and not placed-based and very much in line with the underlying dignity and autonomy of the culture change movement."

Kathy Greenlee, Assistant Secretary for Aging, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Luncheon Plenary
Wednesday, August 11, 1:00 pm–3:00 pm
Meeting at the Crossroads:
Definition 3. Crucial point especially where a decision must be made

Before we leave to take our own separate roads back home, let's join together for a final sit-down luncheon. We'll enjoy Pioneer Network's 1st Annual Video Viewing and Award ceremony, listen to a panel of Sages and hear what they believe is waiting for us at the next Crossroads — and honor a long-time Pioneer who is this year's recipient of the  Picker Award for Excellence in Long-Term Care.

Karen Schoeneman, Deputy Director, Division of Nursing Homes, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Picker Award Recipient

Karen C. Schoeneman, MPA, is one of the nation's leading experts in culture change. For CMS, she manages the Division Clinical Team which has responsibility for the long-term care survey process, the interpretive guidelines, and the new Quality Indicators Survey process. She is one of the founding members of Pioneer Network and is also an Eden Associate.
