Direct care workers face many challenges every day. Leaders also face many challenges if we are to be in right relationship with direct care workers. Do we understand, and are we sensitive to the needs of the direct care workforce? Do we provide education and support to help staff to be their best selves? Do care staff believe in us?
Anna and Chris begin this webinar by discussing these and similar questions to assess where we are from an “organizational relationship” perspective post-pandemic. They will then explore the components of outstanding person-directed and relationship-based care, as well as identify what is different or added to these components for those who work with individuals living with dementia.
Attendees will gain an understanding of theories and applications they can draw on. These will include the work of Tom Kitwood, as well as Chris’ own research on the characteristics that distinguish outstanding caregivers, such as service orientation and empathy.

Anna Ortigara has co-created workforce models and person-directed living models over the course of her long-term care career. She served as the VP of Cultural Transformation for Leading Age Illinois and Director of Program Development for THE GREEN HOUSE Project® – National Team. Also the Associate Director of Long Term Care Accreditation at Joint Commission. Programs developed include LEAP for the 21st Century long term care workforce (MatherLifeways Center on Aging, Evanston, IL), Person-centered dementia care education and leadership programs (Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, Chicago), THE GREEN HOUSE® Project Core Team Education (THE GREEN HOUSE® Project – National Project), Contributions to Coaching Approach to Supervision, Person Directed Living and workforce recruitment and retention projects (PHI, Bronx, NY). Anna is a gerontological nurse and served on the Pioneer Network Board for six years and as President for two years.
Dr. Chris Mulrooney is Associate Dean for Clinical & Community Affairs at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Geriatrics. He has been in long-term care services for over 40 years, having worked in positions from CNA to CEO. He is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator, an ACHCA Fellow, and certified by ACHCA as both a Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility Administrator.
Chris is also Managing Partner and Chairman of Villas at Killearn Lakes, a brand new “small house” assisted living neighborhood that he and his business partners have created in Tallahassee. The Villas’ Vision is to advance culture change and the small house movement through innovative philosophy, architecture, staffing patterns and service delivery.
Chris has a B.S. in Gerontology from the Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of Southern California, a Master’s Degree in Gerontological Services Administration from the New School for Social Research in New York City, and a Ph.D. in Psychology/Gerontological Studies from Boston University where he was a National Institute on Aging Pre-Doctoral Trainee. His research during that time was on the competencies of outstanding long-term care nursing assistants, and he subsequently worked as an organizational psychologist and consultant for many years in applying competency models and other recruitment, retention, and leadership development tools to health care executives.
